Even the Emperor of Sirlende cannot always do as he pleases, but when custom demands he find another bride after the death of his betrothed, a princess he barely knew, Torric Deveras defies his counselors and changes the rules rather than make a loveless marriage.

Ashara Millende is the only daughter of a nobleman, but had her inheritance stolen from her by her unscrupulous stepmother. A servant in the house that should have been hers, she dreams of escaping the drudgery of her life and finding someone who will love her for who she truly is.

When Torric invites all the marriageable women in his kingdom to a five-day holiday of feasts, tournaments, hunts, and balls so that he might choose an Empress from among them, Ashara never dreams that she can attend, much less catch his eye and win his heart. Then a woman with hidden secrets appears who will give Ashara the chance to win her heart's desire - if only she is bold enough to take the first step.

Christine Pope's Ashes of Roses sets the timeless story of Cinderella in the world of her best-selling Latter Kingdoms series (Book 4 of the Tales of the Latter Kingdoms), weaving a spell-binding tale of royal intrigue, familial deceit, and the magic of love.

Ashes of Roses Tales of the Latter Kingdoms Book 4 (Audible Audio Edition) Christine Pope Valerie Gilbert Books Reviews

Terrific story. Descriptive and riveting. The characters were so real, it was almost as if you knew them personally. I could barely stand to put it down at night and then couldn't wait to get home from work to dive back into its pages.
A retelling of a classic fairytale with all the main elements, but told in a brand new way in an imaginary land complete with its own history and legends.
It's too much a re-telling of the Cinderella story. There was also nothing to be gained by the every other chapter male female change in character perspective. By the end things fell apart completely because there is a total lack of credibility about the fact that an aunt clever enough to keep a ruse going throughout the "courtship" period had no transition plan for the announcement day. I kept waiting to see how this was going to happen. But alas it didn't.
Sadly, this is the Cinderella I have had the least pity for. Christine Pope has a great vocabulary and writes well. However, she lets too many threads of plot hang loose. Also, our Cinderella isn't very nice and I couldn't help but think she should be grateful she was treated so poorly or she may have turned out even more nasty.
When I first started reading this, I thought that perhaps the author had borrowed too much from Ever After, however the further into the story I got, the more I realised that it was more of her own twist on several versions of Cinderella.

A simple sweet romance set in another land, one where magic has been banished, but Ashara's Aunt returns foreign lands to learn that her unfortunate niece hasten orphaned and treated atomically buyer stepmother.

The characters are well written, and sympathetic, and the Emperor's seasonings are sound.

A thoroughly enjoyable read.
I was pretty disappointed in this book. The first two on this series were pretty good, light reads but still characters you came to know and like. This book was BORING. The only good thing about Ashara was apparently that she was hot...no debt of character for this one. She never developed as a character and we knew nothing about her other than the fact she was apparently super good looking when put in a nice dress. Then you had the emperor who acted more like a teenage boy than a ruler of a mighty empire. If you are over the age of 15 I would steer clear of this one!
Christine Pope is a talented author, and her descriptions of lavish court life and elegant dresses are well drawn and engrossing. The dialogue between characters is also well done, and for the majority of the story the hero's first person narration is masculine enough to be believable. However, while as readers we can see that both Ashara and Torric are admirable characters who complement each other nicely, the characters have few opportunities to see why they should love each other, as the only trait definitely established is their incredible good looks. This makes their vows of love read like the immature gushing of lusty teenagers.

Also, the motives of the magical aunt seem a little too straightforward to be believable -- I kept waiting for her to become like Aladdin's 'uncle', seeking a second agenda. I have difficulty seeing her thought process actually go like this "let's see, how can I make my niece happy? Marriage to the most powerful man anywhere should be just the ticket! Everyone wants to steep in court intrigue and replace their overbearing stepmother with an icy harridan of a mother-in-law!" It would be an easy temptation for a mysterious 'relative' to attempt to seize behind-the scenes power by arranging for a kind, sweet and biddable girl to marry a powerful ruler...

All in all, this is a slightly-above-average retelling of Cinderella, but a little more attention to relationship building would have made it excellent.
